Analysis of Beach Area Response to Gradual Decrease in Sediment Supply [PDF]

Artificial developments such as dams and harbors can cause serious beach problems by blocking sediment drift from the river. These problems alter the sediment budget, which in turn can lead to long-term shoreline retreat. In this paper, we present the background erosion due to gradual decreases in sediment supply based on sediment mass conservation. The proposed methodology is validated using aerial maps of Korean beaches from the 1970s to the 2010s. Furthermore, we discuss the application of the proposed methodology to beach nourishment according to the time to converge to equilibrium beach area. It is expected that the methodology of this paper can be used to predict and respond to problems caused by changes in sediment budget.
