(Received January 22, 2018; Accepted June 8, 2018)

Keywords: scintillator, luminescence, scintillation, single crystal, fluoride

The scintillation properties of Pr:CaF2 were studied in comparison with those of Eu:CaF2 under α-ray excitation using a sealed source of 241Am. The relative light yields of the Pr:CaF2 crystals were approximately 0.6–13% of the Eu:CaF2 crystal that is known as a conventional scintillator for charged-particle detection. The scintillation decay times of the Pr:CaF2 crystals were significantly faster than that of the Eu:CaF2 crystal. Therefore, the Pr:CaF2 crystals can be used for charged-particle measurements with high count rates.
